My name is Jeff Van Gyssel and I am a volunteer at Welcome Home. My family and I have been blessed to meet so many amazing people and gain some really good friends along the way. What has volunteering with Welcome Home meant to me? Where Are They Now: Jorge and Gloria

Jorge* and Gloria* had emigrated from Colombia to study English in the United States. When guerillas began threatening to kidnap or kill Jorge’s family members in Colombia, the couple knew they could not go back home. In 2006, the US began deporting undocumented people. One morning in 2008, immigration officials came to their neighbourhood and took people away. Jorge and Gloria prayed for protection. For the month of May, Welcome Home residents, volunteers and staff joined Pamela Rojas to create a vibrant outdoor mural at Welcome Home. Two volunteers shared their painting stories with us:  The Hartwick/Dorsch family from Glencairn Church and Eileen from Elevation. Where Are They Now? Kimberly’s Story

Though Kimberly is only home from teaching English in Mongolia for a short while, she makes time to visit the people she lived with during her year and a half as supervisor at Welcome Home. “They are like family,” she explains. One of the people she lived with was Lee. Lee arrived from Mynamar, 6 months pregnant and alone. When her baby boy was born, he was welcomed into the family at Welcome Home. “The baby was like our community baby,” Kimberly says.
